Live in the city or have limited outdoor space? Me too, and I’ll be the first to admit that developing a green thumb can be challenging when you’re stuck with just containers. Over the years I’ve experimented with countless pots and other things that could hold plants while searching for the perfect solution for small spaces.
While there are certainly pros and cons to each, I have finally found one type that beats the rest by a considerable rate consistently season after season. I’m talking about fabric pots! These collapsible wonders keep performing and I always seem to get fantastic yields out of everything I put in them!
Here are some of the key benefits, and to keep it fair, some cons of growing in fabric containers.
1. They allow for better aeration and root development. Roots need oxygen as well as water, and these seem to allow for the best combination.
2. They stay a lot cooler! Since they have the advantage of additional airflow, the soil stays a lot cooler which also helps root development.
3. Say goodbye to worrying about proper drainage. The entire pot acts as drainage so you’ll never need to worry about flooding and root rot again!
4. They’re super portable and easy to move around. Not only are they much lighter than clay pots and others, most come with handles built right in!
5. They aren’t anything to look at. I won’t sugarcoat this one. These can be an eyesore to most people (including my wife!). While they do have some with designs, they just don’t stack up to nicely painted pottery.
6. They dry out much faster. This comes with the territory as they allow for so much more air circulation. If you’re in a dry climate, you may find that these need more frequent watering.
7. As far as durability goes, I’ve been using the same fabric pots for a few years now and they haven’t ripped/torn/failed yet!
8. They’re cheap! Fabric pots are a complete bargain for what you’re getting, and you can usually find 5 packs for under $20 on Amazon®! For this reason (as well as those above) I HIGHLY recommend giving them a try next time you’re in the market for containers or if you just want to try something new! I’ve linked a few of my favorites below which you can purchase directly from Amazon®.
Happy gardening!
