Now that the weather is warming up and summer is in full swing, it’s time to grow some amazing tomatoes!
This easy to grow garden staple loves the sun and heat that summer offers and can give you some delicious produce right from your backyard, deck, or patio! Don’t have acres of land or even space for a raised bed? Don’t worry! Tomatoes do perfectly well in containers too! Here are some quick tips for getting the most out of your plants.
Tip 1:
Give them enough space! Tomatoes do perfectly well in containers, but they need to be at least 5 gallons in size. Any smaller won’t give their roots enough space to develop fully. You also need to make sure that each plant has around 3 ft. all to itself. If you crowd them too close together it will hinder their ability to soak in all of that wonderful sunshine!
Tip 2:
Stay on top of your watering! Tomatoes need plenty of water to develop those delicious fruits. I recommend watering as soon as the top 1/4 inch of soil is dry to the touch. The time it takes for the soil to dry out varies depending on climate and where they are planted. As a general rule, tomatoes in containers will need to be water far more often than those in raised beds or the ground.
Tip 3:
Feed your plants! All of your plants need more than just water and light to thrive. Start feeding per the instructions on your fertilizer as soon as the first few true leaves appear. This is especially critical when your plants start flowering. If you skimp on the feedings, you’ll end up with underdeveloped plants and a poor harvest.
